The
"Consorzio per la Tutela del Formaggio Montasio" (Consortium for the
Protection of Montasio Cheese) was founded on November 20th, 1984 to
support and protect the conservation and sale of Montasio Cheese and
to safeguard its typical characteristics. The Consortium is a voluntary
association of Montasio cheese producers. On March 10th, 1986 Montasio
cheese obtained the acknowledgement of denomination of origin by presidential
decree. Montasio has been awarded the special D.O.P. qualification (Protected
Denomination of Origin) from the European Union (Reg. C.E.E. n. 1107,
12/06/1996) The job of the Consortium is done at the institutional level
(controls on the production and sale) as well as the promotional valorization
of the production. As far as the control of production is concerned,
the inspectors of the Consortium have the job to verify the quantity
as well as the quality aspects of production.
In particular, the inspectors verify if the transformed milk Montasio comes from the area of production. From the qualitative point of view the Consortium, more than just assisting in the verification of production, takes samples for analysis of qualitative parameters. Part consists of its work in research; in collaboration with major entities and academic institutes of the Italian north-east, research is continually conducted involving the technological part as always increasing the knowledge of the Montasio product. With its inspectors, it carries out an intense job of surveillance of the marketing and sales of Montaio and the protection of the consumer. In particular, the continual verification of the hygienic/sanitary norms of the sale of Montasio, the legal use of the brand and the correct use of the name of origin. On March 16th, 1987, the Consortium for the Protection of Montasio cheese has been appointed, with presidential decree, the official vigilance of production and commercialization through its own inspectors with the Police Agent qualification.
